Orson Welles
|
The War of the Worlds was a classic example of Old Time Radio Sci-FiMany original fans of Old Time Radio can recall stories of the historic night Orson Welles panicked the country with his vivid rendition of "The War of the Worlds." My Mother was listening that night. I asked her if she was fooled by the broadcast, and if she felt, (as many others) that it was a real news report. She said she was not fooled, but that she personally knew of many folks who thought that it was real and that the Martians had landed! Two things contributed to the hysteria caused by Welles' broadcast. First, was the extremely realistic news-report format of the show. The second and less predictable issue was that a large number of listeners switched over to "The War of the Worlds" part way through the broadcast when an unpopular singer followed a commercial on the Charlie McCarthy show. It was an early incident of "channel surfing". When I listened to the War of the Worlds for the first time, I was struck by the realism of the radio announcer's panicked description of the Martian attack. It reminded me of the broadcast of the Hindenburg tragedy. I wasn't at all surprised to learn that the actor who played that part had consciously tried to model his delivery after that broadcast. We'd like to think we're smarter than our countrymen from that earlier time, but you need only look to the recent Y2K panic to realize we're not as sophisticated as we think. "The War of the Worlds" is by no means the only Science Fiction gem from the era of Old Time Radio. "The Martian Chronicles," "The Time Machine," and "Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea" are classics by anyone's definition. The fifties were the "Golden Age" of science fiction writing, with talents like Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, and Ray Bradbury, all in their prime. Judging from the quality of the offerings in this collection, fifties radio sci-fi measures up quite well with the printed science fiction of that time. |
